THE OTHER FACES OF GASTON

Before Walt Disney Studios chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg ordered that the film be scrapped and started over from scratch in 1989, 20 minutes of the first version had already been storyboarded and characters had been developed. In this version, Belle has a little sister Clarice, they lived with their father Maurice and their domineering Aunt Marguerite, who insistently tried to match her with a wealthy aristocrat named Gaston, in a Victorian France.

Before the character was reinvented by Andreas Deja as a handsome casanova, in the earlier version, he was a foppish 18th century aristocrat. In most of the concept art found for this particular character, he was portrayed as a noble with a powdered wig, plumed hat and walking stick. What a change huh?

The character wasn’t even in the original fairy tale, he was introduced in order to intensify the theme of inner beauty versus outer beauty and give a sense of danger.
